Tennis For Exercise

When you look at today’s tennis stars, you will notice one thing, and that is that they are not as muscular as athletes tend to be in other sports. Football and basketball require lots of weightlifting and a strong muscular core to execute at a high potential. Tennis on the other hand is a highly cardiovascular activity where physical stamina is really the name of the game. A competitor who is more talented than another will lose on a consistent basis just because they are not in as good of shape.

All of the major tournaments(The US Open, The French Open, The Australian Open, and Wimbledon) are all best-of-five set finals in the men’s game now, which means matches that can approach the four and five hour mark. This is at the highest level; however tennis is still great exercise for the average player. It consists of quick running with lots of starting and stopping. It differs from long distance running or sprinting, because you are not thinking about running. This is because you are thinking about setting up your body to be able to hit the best shot possible. So in essence it’s more of a chess match than exercise. Also it’s a great way to lose weight!
